Oops!

Pamilyar ba kayo sa grading na may decimal ang format? Or, ganito rin ang system na gamit dyan sa school nyo?

Nasanay kasi ako mula sa elementary ng by percentage – 100% ang perfect, 75 ang passing. Minsan yata ibinaba pa ng iba sa 70, 60, o 50 yung pasang-awa. May ibang school naman na letra ang grading system – A, B, C… hanggang F nga ba yun? Nang lumipat ako sa public school (1974), O, VS, S, F, at NI naman. Nung nag-highschool ako, balik sa percentage.

Maski ang scoring sa NCEE nuon, by percentage. Ahehe, I got a score of 95 – pinakamababang di-hamak sa scores ng lima kong kapatid na pawang mga 98 hanggang 99+. Maski nung makapasok ako ng college, gulat ako dahil marami nuon akong blockmates na 99+.

Pero wala lang din… I found out na mediocrity is not exemplified by a low NCEE rating or a below-average score or grade.  May matataas ang IQ na talagang matalino, meron din namang mga “geniuses” na hindi naman tutuong matalino. Hindi magandang panukat ang IQ ng talino ng isang tao. Yes, that could be one, pero hindi yun LANG.

Ganito ang grading system sa amin:

1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 1.0 = excellent, 1.5 = very good.

Ma-maintain mo lang na ganito ang average mo, nasa chancellor’s o dean’s list ka (university or college scholar). Si bestfriend ko, parating ganyan, PNB scholar din sya.

2.0, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75 2.0 = good, 2.5 = satisfactory.

Kung wala kang ambisyong magpataas ng grades, ay okey na yan.

3.0 “Passed.” Pasang-awa kumbaga. Karamihan sa mga kilala ko,

olrayt na ito kung sa mga subjects lang na hindi namin gusto.

Inc “Incomplete.” Baka may kulang ka lang na project o exam,

ay di kumpletuhin mo. Kung ayaw yo, di wag yo.

4.0 “Conditional failure.” Kelangan mong mag-make-up.

Dito ka kilabutan pag terror na BADING o DOM ang propesor mo, kasi baka pamiliin ka: “Kuwatro… o kuwarto?”

Nyay! ‘conditional’ nga!

Drp Wala kang planong ituloy ang subject kaya mo sya ni-dropped.

Next sem or sems na lang.

5.0 “Failure.” Wala nang pag-asa ito, chong.

Tulad ng “Drp” ripit mo na lang neks sems, en beter lak neks tayms.

Ahuy, eto’ng grades ko nung undergrad college student ako sa UPLB. NiPULAhan kong mga ‘tagilid’; sa tabi nun, ang retake o completion.

Naipasa ko yang ballroom-dancing nang kaliwa pa rin ang dalawa kong paa.

Dalawang PE subjects ang kinuha kong hindi natuloy. Lawn tennis yung isa – nag-awol ako, bago pa makunsume sa akin si sir, dahil kung saan-saan ko ‘ipinapasa’ ang bola. Advanced swimming naman yung isa, kaso dadalawa kaming nag-enroll kaya na-dissolved na lang yung klase, at hindi na in-offer ang subject that sem.
