gabi

“Nag-uumalpas!”

————————————————————————————————

FACT: Hamsters are nocturnal creatures (they sleep the whole day) — That is why daydreaming is the one activity they are not capable of doing.

Wigol-wigol

Natapos na ang project ni Wigwam.*

The ‘tread-wheel’ that was named after his great-granddad Gandalf was finally completed.

“Mission accomplished!” 😀 eka ng Nak-ng-Wigol-Daga.

Nine lives

NOTE: Hamsters’ gestation period (pagbubuntis ) is 16 days (6-12 is the normal number of pups per litter); average lifespan, between 2 and 3 years.

(‘By batch’ sila kung dumating, kaya ‘by batch’ din sila kung lumisan. 😛 )

My nine living hammies.

How are my 9 hammies doin’? (a rundown):

Panapanagang (1 year 9 months 22 days). The elders (Hamsters are already considered seniors when they reached their 18th month).

Mochawonka (). Eldest male, therefore the family chief. 😆 He’s gaining weight lately. The Hall (made available to all members as a hammy-gym) was reserved for him from 6 to 7 am, and most of the evening hours.

Mochahontas (). Grumpy grandma’s bites are not that ‘nasty’ anymore. (Obviously, the “Lola” had passed on some of her temperament trait to granddaughter Syma!)

Isnohontas (). To both humans and fellow-hamsters, the peace-loving momma remains the most amiable of all. She’s been spending most of her time sleeping, but insists on getting out of her cage when awake.

PanapanaIIgang (1 year 7 months 22 days). The new oldies are only 60 days younger than their parents, Mochawonka and Isnohontas.

Wigwam (). Still young-looking. Always wary and suspicious, ready to bite (not so hard – “nip” is more appropriate) if handled against his will. Very responsive to odors of his kind – male’s musk makes him gnash his teeth, female’s scent excites him so easily (this behavior is typical).

Teepee (). Ispidbol’s widow has a cyclical mood shift. Shows hostility toward her fellow-hammies except when she is in heat. The most vocally expressive among them.

Boolagang (1 year 4 months 16 days). Two of the three surviving male offspring of Mochahontas (A third white male named “Hamty” is still living with his foster owner). These two ‘boolaboys’ are the new ‘record-holders’ (you may want to check this out – The Lupindilayks).

Bebong II () and Berio II (). The ‘Dugyot’ (unGroomed) Brothers 😆 are the most hyperactive. Physical growth seems retarded. Sharing cage, still no sign of serious fight or struggle… just like that – carrot- and wheel-olympics 😆 (see video).

Chochobebes (1 year 1 month 17 days). The offspring of the late Isnobol. My youngest hammies have reached their ‘midlife’ last month (June 4).

Syma (). The once-bitey hamster has been learning to deal with humans. Meticulous regarding her food and toilet habits. Active in the first few hours after midnight, making all sorts of noise when I and my wife are about to sleep.

Amboy () shifted his daily sleep-and-wake schedule. At about 12 noon everyday (when all other hamsters are sound asleep), the once-thin and timid little hammy is persistent to leave his cage for a four-hour ‘workout’ in The Hall. The fact is, he is right… he’s quite big now for his homecage wheel.

Quite similar to linked cabs on a subway rail? — passing so swiftly, coming and going in quick succession (s’ensya na sa ni-sampol kong tweyn…

Watch the video to see what I mean. 😉

Wigwam. How many corn seeds can you count?

The word “hamster” was coined from the German word “hamstern” which means to hoard.”

Yes, hamsters are natural hoarders – but don’t you despise them for that! Hoarding is their God-given instinct to survive.

So much about rice-hoarding – masisira lang ang araw ko.

How would you react kung may anonymous sender… na naman!

Mundong araw… anlabo yata?

How’re the hammies?

Hamsters’ average lifespan is between 2 and 3 years. Perhaps that explains why they do everything at top speed? They don’t have a long life to live – at least from our point of view.

My 11 hammies, a rundown:

Chiaroscurogang (2 years 27 days). To humans, this is equivalent to more or less 80 years.

My oldest seniors spend most of their time sleeping and less of wheel-turning. Isnobol’s white fur is already thinning and losing its luster. Ispidbol’s movements are now less snappy and much slower.

Panapanagang (1 year 6 months 23 days). New senior citizens (18 months for hamsters are considered seniors years).

Mochahontas is still grumpy at her age, but her bites are ‘moderated.’ Mochawonka is still very active and always wants to get out of his cage, still ‘wiggles’ when handled. Isnohontas is the biggest, and yet my most human-friendly female hamster. She sleeps a lot nowadays, seldom shows an interest to go out for an exercise.

PanapanaIIgang (1 year 4 months 23 days). This litter is only 60 days younger than their parents, Mochawonka and Isnohontas.

Like his father, Wigwam always wants to get out of his cage, jumps from an elevated position without hesitation. Teepee has a rounder but stouter body than her mother. She is not that bitey anymore.

Boolagang (1 year 1 month 16 days). Living offspring of Mochahontas. New ‘record breakers’ (you may want to check this out The Lupindilayks.

At more than one year old, Bebong II and Berio II (male counterparts of their late sisters Bebang-girdel and Beria-girdel) are still sharing cage and wheel, showing not any sign of squabble. Until now, they don’t exhibit any mood of hostility – I never hear any one of them clack their teeth. During their active hours, ‘escaping’ from their cages to explore the outside world is their prime obsession.

Chochobebes (10 months 17 days). These youngest hammies are the offspring of my oldest living hamster, Isnobol.

Syma is not that grumpy anymore, though apparently her mood shifts so easily when brought near Amboy whom she can still recognize as the younger brother she used to bully. Amboy remains the nervous type, but being a grown-up male, he is no longer afraid of any female hamster – his elder sister is not an exemption.

Tukso… layuan mo ako?

Wigwam and Teepee are the twin son and daughter of the teenage couple Mochawonka the “wiggler” and Isnohontas Kotonbol.

Wigwam Wigglerson is the husband of the departed Beria-girdel, a Boolagang. Beria-girdel died because of birthing problem, leaving Wigwam a widower.

Teepee Pompom is the wife of Ispidbol. The post entitled Baog na Daga explains why Ispidbol and Teepee have no hammies of their own.

(Tatlong paragraph, tatlo agad ang link… tsk tsk tsk, hanep!)

Wigwam’s morning exercise

Hamsters are also active during the very early morning. Wigwam is shown here ‘warming down’ in preparation for his all-day sleep, to wake up again at around 5pm for another ‘warming up’ for the approaching activity in the evening.

Teepee’s vocal languages

The sound you heard is typically exhibited by males. I presume that this is their expression of loneliness, boredom or drowsiness.

Ispidbol is the hamster in the bigger cage at left. Teepee is the white one at right. The sounds they make are the hamsters’ SEX and MATING call languages.

Teenage Mom and Dad

The featured hamsters this week are the three midlifers — Mochahontas, Mochawonka, and Isnohontas. They are the offspring of Isnowitwit and the late Arrow.

Again I divided the discussion into two posts. Here I wrote about the “teenage couple” Mochawonka and Isnohontas. Later today on the next post, I will talk about Mochahontas the widowed wife, a mother to six hamsters.

I named this litter the Panapanagang after their father. The siblings were not separated until after more than 40 days from their birth enabling the mating of the young pair Mochawonka and Isnohontas. 😆

It never occurred to me that Isnohontas was pregnant. I didn’t prepare the cage for parturition. On 29 November 2006, I heard feeble squeaking coming from her cage. Surprised but sure about what I heard, I peered through and found two small babies squirming. Four small lifeless bodies were aligned side by side on the pan below the cage. Surely they died instantly upon falling on the wet and cold excreta right after their birth.

Fortunately I separated the Panapanagang so soon before this happened. Otherwise, Mochahontas and Mochawonka could have killed all the six babies. Or, with the presence of her two siblings, Isnohontas — the mother herself — could have eaten all her babies because of protective cannibalism.

Mochawonka in his cage (19 Dec 2006, 29 Nov 2007)

I named Mochawonka “the wiggler” because of his habit of wiggling whenever I handle him during his active hours. He and his wife were two months old when they became parents — the youngest to become a father and a mother among their hamster-kin.

Isnohontas with her two babies (19, 25 Dec 2006)

Though her pregnancy was ‘unplanned’, Isnohontas had pleasantly mothered two healthy white offspring — Wigwam Wigglerson ♂ and Teepee Pompom ♀… (More about this twin on 14 Dec 2007)

Isnohontas Kotonbol is my most friendly female hamster. She doesn’t bite (unusual for females of her kind) nor wiggle when handled. She likes to stay in my hand still, stares at me blankly, whiskers moving. She always feels at home in other cages — except her husband’s (if she’s not in heat), where she only likes to ‘steal’ and hoard all his food stack. Baka naman kasi hindi nag-iintrega si mister? Hehe, nag-iintrega naman — “Bisi as a bambolbi” na nga e! 😆

One and a dozen

This link will show you the ancestral lines of the 13 living hamsters now under my care: Hamster family members

You may ask: “Why so many?”

Since the beginning, I do not intend to keep more than a dozen. Four is ideal, or six maybe, especially for such solitary creatures that need to be caged separately. That means if you have twelve Syrian hamsters, you need twelve individual cages. *gasp!*

Hamsters multiply at a very fast rate (buti pa sila). A female can give birth to an average of six to eight babies after only 16 days of pregnancy (sana kami ni misis ganun din). 😆 To prevent a possible complete “hamster takeover” of my house, I have chosen to give each of my female hamster only one chance of producing a litter. By the way, I am proud to tell you that my hamsters, male or female, are all monogamous. Walang kabit, walang sabit.

Me libre namang mass wedding kung ayaw nyo gumastos. Masaya pa dahil marami kayo.

Nalayo na naman tayo ano? Nabanggit kasi yung kabit e. Sayang naman kung hindi pa makakapagsermon aheheh. Okey balik tayo sa daga:

[To my readers who don’t understand Tagalog: the words in italics above is a Filipino “joke” (tsk tsk tsk) and will lose its ‘humor’ if translated in English… my apologies.]

I also give away hamsters for free, keeping only one or two from a new litter for me. My only requirement for prospective pet-owners is a safe and decent cage that is especially designed for hamsters, with an exercise wheel and a drinking bottle. There are a lot to chose from in almost all pets shops locally.

But sometimes, some people who have made ‘reservations’ don’t want to take the cost of buying a cage. In such cases I am always firm: NO cage, NO hamster. If they just want a toy for their kids, I discourage them from owning any pet. Pets are not toys… they are living animals.

Now you know why I’ve got thirteen hamsters.

Here they are, grouped according to their respective litters. Their ages as of this date are also indicated. All the photos are ‘clickable’ and will link you directly to my flickr photos.

The CHIAROSCUROGANG (age: 1 year 7 months 20 days)

The senior citizens. These three are the oldest in the family. They belong to the 4th generation. They are the litters of Blakdyak and Snow White (both departed).

Isnowitwit (♀)

Isnowitwit Kotonbol (Snowitwit Cottonball) ♀

Isnobol (♂)

Isnobol (Snowball) ♂

Ispidbol (♂)

Ispidbol (Speedball) ♂

The PANAPANAGANG (age: 1 year 1 month 16 days)

The mid-lifers, more or less. These three are the litters of Isnowitwit and the late Arrow.

Mochahontas (♀)

Mochahontas

Mochawonka (♂)

Mochawonka ♂ “the wiggler”

Isnohontas (♀)

Isnohontas Kotonbol (Snowhontas Cottonball) ♀

The PANAPANA-II-GANG (age: 11 months 16 days)

The unexpected fraternal twin. This litter was unplanned and unexpected. The Panapanagang were not separated until after more than 40 days from their birth enabling the mating of the young siblings Mochawonka and Isnohontas. Only two (2) of the resulting six (6) pups survived, the other four died upon falling on the cold and damp bottom of the cage at birth. I didn’t know their mother was pregnant until I just heard squeaking inside the cage.

Wigwam (♂)

Wigwam Wigglerson ♂ (son of Mochawonka ‘the wiggler’) is the husband of Beria-girdel (deceased).

Teepee (♀)

Teepee Pompom ♀ is the wife of Ispidbol. The couple are unable to sire on their first and second mating. After what happened to Beria-girdel, I didn’t aim for a third.

The BOOLAGANG (age: 8 months 9 days)

The posthumous litter. These three, along with three others including the late Beria-girdel, were born 11 days after their father Berio died. Mochahontas is their mother.

Bebong II (♂) & Berio II (♂)

Bebong II ♂ and Berio II ♂ are still sharing a common cage as to this date — quite remarkable for Syrian hamsters.

Bebang-girdel (♀)

Bebang-girdel ♀ is the laziest and drowsiest of all the family members. When awake, her habit, beside eating and grooming, is stretching and yawning. Mahihiya si Garfield.

The CHOCHOBEBES (age: 5 months 10 days)

The returning litter. These are the surviving litter of Chocho, a female who was given for adoption. When their mother died, Syma and Amboy were sent back to us. Isnobol is their father.

Syma (♀)

Syma ♀ is so far the grumpiest hamster in the family. She’s so ‘bitey’ nobody can handle her. It’s a real challenge to tame her, and I am optimistic about it.

Amboy (♂)Amboy (♂), his other side

Amboy ♂ is the youngest of all — the thirteenth hamster, so to speak. He was a candidate for adoption. But his physical condition the day he and her elder sister came back made me change my mind. He was then so small and skinny, nervous due to Syma continually harassing him. (Have you tried clicking on his smaller photo?)

That’s right… Amboy is a one-eye-blind hamster. This is probably(?) an injury inflicted by his sister when they were yet still babies.

And like what I was always saying: the smallest and the weakest always get most of my care and attention. The 13th hamster is now the first.

Swerte pala ang pang-trese??? 😐 😦 😥 😕 😮 😡 🙄 8) 🙂 😀 😛 😉 😆 Acheche…! Dyoks lang syempre. … See you next week!

Dying young

There is only one thing which makes it very hard for me to accept the departure of a pet. It is when it didn’t live its full lifespan, especially if it died so suddenly, without any hint or warning.

Beria-girdel was a Boolagang, one of the three daughters of Berio and Mochahontas. She was a very active and lively hamster. I mated her with Wigwam when she was in heat on September 2; incidentally that was 16 days before my birthday, which means her babies were expected to be born on my birthday. But like Snowy and the elder Beria, she got birthing problems.

On September 18, she suddenly became dormant and I could hear her groans. To make it worst, she refused to touch her food. The daytime passed without sign of any babies, only bleeding. Since there were still the hours of the night to complete one day, I dared not to touch her because I was afraid I could do her more harm than good. Finally a portion of the first baby came out the following day. She was straining very hard but unable to push it out, I had to pull it gently; and I could see her feeling of relief when it came out. Minutes later came out the other small lifeless bodies all by themselves one by one.

My mother used to tell me her story about how she suffered when she gave birth to me — I was born by breech birth and came out a “blue baby” … I was seemingly lifeless — still, not breathing and didn’t cry or made any response to the new world outside. If not for the expertise of the midwife, who needed to hold me upside down by my feet and snap me at my buttocks, I’m not here at this moment telling this or my hamsters’ story. The birth ‘crippled’ my mother for a month or two.

Beria-girdel’s last attempt to “crawl” to her sleeping spot (she was literally pulling her hind legs) was still very clear in my memory. By the look in her deepened eyes, I can feel as if she was saying:

“It’s alright, Robert… just let me ‘go’ — I’m dying.”

Late that night, after two days of intense labor stress, Beria-girdel died very solemnly. It was two days after my birthday, just less than 40 days ago. Again, another moment of mournful crying for my poor little pet. I couldn’t restrain the tears in my eyes as I buried her small body early the next morning — Autumnal Equinox, the first day of the Fall…

Beria-girdel lived for only six months and 15 days.

In every litter produced by the first pair there were always some whites: one, two and three in the first, second and third, respectively. No wonder, for Bitoy and Bebang were carriers of the albino genetic code. The first couple’s father was himself an albino. Mistisong kastila kung baga… 😆

Gandalf was the youngest among the third litter, and the youngest of the 22 hamsters of the second generation. By reason of his color (or the absence of it), I named him after a middle-earth wizard in Tolkien’s trilogy Lord of the Rings. I also called him Gandalf-pola because he looked to me as a small polar bear and his eyes were colored red (kulay-pola ang mata).

Timid and shy. Nervous and clumsy, frequently looks disoriented… Afraid of high places — always likes to climb but afraid and hesitant when going down, which usually ends up with unglamorous fall… That was my Gandalf.

Doesn’t refuse to be handled, but nips fingers that get through their way inside his cage… A habitual sleeper under his ‘bed sheet’. Upon waking up in the late afternoon, patiently waits for a treat on the top deck of his cage… Another inventive wheel-turner… These were just some of his unforgettable traits.

Gandalf lived for 26 months and 14 days. He was definitely not immortal like Gandalf the wizard, but Gandalf the hamster’s memory was immortalized by the endless journey round the circle of the Wheel that was named after him.
